Comprising six knives, six tablespoons and five forks, each porcelain handle gilt-decorated and molded with acanthus leaves, each side painted with military encampment scenes, within gilt rocaille scroll borders, the lower section centering a pair of green swags, apparently unmarked, in a later fitted case

Lot Essay

This important service was presented to Empress Catherine II (1729-1796) by Frederick II, King of Prussia (1712-1786). The plates and flatware depict military encampment scenes from the Russo-Turkish wars and were painted by Johann-Baptist-Balthasar Borrman.
