Poetry including one line from a ghazal of Sa'di and another attributed to the poet Rashki Hamadani, Persian manuscript on gold speckled paper, each panel composed of 2ll. of black nasta'liq in cloud bands on gold ground, with a line of two panels of smaller nasta'liq and illuminated cartouches between, laid down on card between gold and polychrome borders, with very delicate contemporaneous floral and figurative gold illuminated margins, a panel with the bismillah and illuminated headpiece above, the following panel with an associated panel of illumination stuck down, final panel with the signature and date, the panels concertina bound, minor staining, green, yellow and silk lining at beginning and end, old collector's label

Lot Essay

Muhammad Zaman al-Tabrizi, who was originally from Kirman but grew up in Tabriz, is recorded by Qadi Ahmad as a scribe of manuscripts as well as calligraphic pages. His only other recorded works are three calligraphic pages of which one is dated AH 994 (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval ve Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol.III, Tehran, 1348 sh., p. 740, and V. Minorsky (transl.), A Treatise by Qadi Ahmad Son of Mir Munshi, Calligraphers and Painters, Washington, 1959, p. 166).
