Lot Essay

This portrait is a copy of a portrait of Shah Jahan with the Imperial Seal by Abu al-Hasan, dated 1628 and now in the Aga Khan Collection (Susan Stronge, Made for Mughal Emperors, Royal Treasures from Hindustan, New York, 2010, pl. 22, p.45). The artist Ghulam Murtaza Khan, author of the celebrated portraits of Akbar Shah II is known to have signed his works using the epiteth Nadir al-Zaman (Wonder of the Age), as it appears it the present painting. However the signature ghulaman, the Persian plural for ghulam, would indicate that more than one artist worked on this portrait.
