The first a small carnelian seal inscribed in nasta'liq script, dated, and mounted on silver mounts with ivory handle, the handle slightly loose; the second a silver seal inscribed in nasta'liq script, dated, the reverse engraved with large petals, a hanging loop at top

Lot Essay

The inscription on the silver seal dated AH 1192/1778-79 AD reads "Edward Cotsford Esquire Governor of Bandar Masuhli Patan and other sarkarat 1192". Masulipatnam (Machilipatnam) is a port located on the Coromandel cost, north of Madras and south of Vizagapatnam.

The inscription on the red hardstone seal dated AH 1171/1757-58 AD reads "Robert Palk Bahadur sana 1171". Sir Robert Palk was an Englishman who served in the East India company and was governor of the Madras Presidency (1763-67).
