ERNST HAECKEL (1834-1919). SIR CHARLES WYVILLE THOMSON (1830-1882) and JOHN MURRAY (1841-1914) editors.
Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger during the years 1873-76 -- Zoology: Vol. XXVIII. Report on the Siphonophorae. London: for HMSO, 1888. Large 4° (319 x 247mm). 50 colour lithographic plates, including 8 white-line on black and 10 chromo-lithographs, with half-title. (Half title with crude repair to two large tears not touching text, short closed tear to fore-edge of six leaves.) Contemporary morocco-backed tapa-cloth-style decorative boards, red morocco label lettered in gilt to spine (upper section of top joint cracked but firm, extremities slightly rubbed). Provenance: neat scientific pencil annotations to margin throughout.
FIRST EDITION OF A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED LANDMARK STUDY OF MARINE LIFE. A class of marine invertebrates, Siphonophorae are composed of colonies of individuals rather than single organisms, the most well-known example being the Portuguese-man-o-war (Physalia physalis). Haeckel's detailed report not only includes examples collected during HMS Challenger's ground-breaking voyage but also species found on earlier and later expeditions. Many species were shown for the first time, and the superb lithographic plates, particularly the white-line on black images, display the creatures as they were seen floating in the ocean. The thorough scientific exploration of the world's oceans carried out by the Challenger expedition lay the foundations for the science of oceanography. Nissen ZBI, 1787; cf. Hill 1664.
