Lot Essay

With Rolex original fitted brown presentation box.

The present watch is a beautiful example of a reference 3055 wristwatch, characterized by its rather small 30 mm. diameter and by the word "Anti-Magnetique" on the dial. At the time of its launch, the chronograph movement of the watch, with its 10 1/2''' of size, was advertised as the world's smallest. The reference was launched in the 1930s with olive pushers but a re-edition, was launched in the 1950s with rectangular pushers. This watch is from the re-edition of the reference, featuring intact rectangular pushers, an elegant flat bezel and a fine-looking original dial with facetted lozenge-shaped and dagger numerals. The 10 1/2''' movement used for the re-edition by Rolex was a Valjoux calibre 69.

Collectors lovingly refer to mid-sized reference 3055 as the "piccolino", which translates from Italian to "the little one".

Reference 3055 is illustrated and described in 100 Years of Rolex by Guido and Franca Mondani, p. 10, as well as in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 108 - 111.
