Ce masque se distingue par sa très grande ancienneté et par une provenance rare pour une oeuvre provenant de Nouvelle-Guinée.
Voir Newton (1961, fig.207) pour un masque comparable collecté par Paul Wirz en 1930 et aujourd'hui conservé au musée de Bâle (inv.Vb7829) et voir Welsch (in Welsh, Webb et Haraha, 2007, fig.40) pour une photographie in-situ de A.B. Lewis prise en 1912 figurant deux danseurs portant des masques kovave.
