AN IMPERIAL CLOISONNE ENAMEL CENSER
QIANLONG INCISED SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
The compressed globular body of the censer is brightly decorated with lotus blooms and prunus, between a raised band of gilt lotus petals and ruyi-heads enamelled in sapphire-blue. The waisted neck is further decorated with a band of smaller flowers with curled tendrils, flanked by a pair of gilt scroll handles. The base is embellished with multi-coloured scrolling tendrils, reserving a central gilt rectangular panel inscribed with the reign mark in a vertical line, above a single character, Ri.

Lot Essay

The miniature size of the current censer suggests that it might have been part of a garniture set to be displayed on the scholar's table. A small censer of almost identical shape and design from the Beijing Palace Museum, for example, is illustrated as part of a garniture together with a miniature vase and covered box, in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum - Enamels (3) - Cloisonne in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Beijing, 2011, pl. 4 (fig. 1).
