A SMALL CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY
The cover is carved through thick layers of cinnabar lacquer to depict a landscape scene with a boy attendant approaching two aged scholars in a pavilion besides bamboo trees growing from behind rockwork. The sides of the cover and box are carved with keyfret bands. The base, incised with a Zhang Cheng zao mark, and the interior, are applied with black lacquer.
