Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, Ibrahim sits by a fire under a tall tree, angels above him in the sky and standing before him bring him food, birds around them, a yogi seats in the background, within black and white-ruled yellow borders, with orange margins, an inscription in white devanagari at top, the reverse with various modern notes, losses to corners, otherwise in good condition

Lot Essay

Ibrahim Adham was a ninth century Sultan of Balkh, who after receiving visionary dreams, renounced the world to live the life of an ascetic. The Sufi saint was cared for by angels. It became a popular theme in 18th century Mughal painting.
