Lot Essay

This folio comes from an astronomical treatise where constellations are depicted in the form of figures walking through a landscape. On these illustrations, the landscape is divided into bands with a decorative floral ground, a plain midground and miniature buildings in a hilly landscape in the background.
A number of illustrated folios from this dispersed manuscript are in public collections, see for instance The San Diego Museum of Art (1990.531) and the Brooklyn Museum of Art (71.120).
