MÜNSTER, Sebastian (1488-1552). Die neuwen Inseln, so hinder Hispanien gegen Orient bey dem land Indic legen. [Basel: Henric Petri, 1550].
Woodcut map, image 256 x 342 mm (293 x 358 mm sheet). Matted, framed and glazed.
From a German-language edition of Münster's Cosmographia. Münster's map of America is the first to show all of North and South America as separate continents. It includes the erroneous information from Verrazano that a narrow channel of land separated the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans with direct access to Asia; in fact, he saw the Pamlico Sound across the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
