CHURCHILL IN THE TRENCHES WELCOMES THE COMFORTS OF HOME, as he writes to apologize for an earlier communication that was less welcoming: "This [earlier] answer to your generous offer was sent in the absence of the correspondence relating to previous offers of comforts, and it is greatly regretted that the request should in that way have come to be so overstated." In his own hand, Churchill adds: "Anything you may be able to send in these lines will be greatly appreciated." After resigning in disgrace at the end of 1915 because of the Gallipoli debacle, Churchill insisted on going into active service in France. He served from January to May 1916, when he resigned his commission and returned to the War Cabinet as minister of munitions. CHURCHILL LETTERS FROM HIS BRIEF SERVICE IN THE TRENCHES ARE SCARCE.
