TAURELLUS, Nicolaus (1547-1606). Emblemata Physico-Ethica. Nuremberg: Paul Kaufmann, 1595.

8o (159 x 97 mm). Title within woodcut architectural border and 83 (of 84) emblematic woodcuts, each above Latin verses and facing a blank leaf with woodcut border intended for use as an album amicorum. (Lacking E2 [see below], some occasional pale spotting and a few pale stains.) Later green velvet. Provenance: Johann Georg Goering (presentation copy from the author, signed with initials at foot of title, with inscriptions from Goering's friends at Heidelberg University); William Beckford (Hamilton Palace Sale, 1883, lot 2440); John William Pease (bookplate); acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1981.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO JOHANN GEORG GOERING on the title-page, and containing 24 inscriptions in Latin or Greek from Goering's friends at Heidelberg University, all dated between 1605 and 1607. Among the autograph inscriptions are those of J. Pareus, D. Gothofredus, W. Lossius. H. Rosenberg, H. Geier, G. Regius, G. Agricola and C. Leübrand. The lacking leaf E2 may be a cancel, as both copies cited by Praz also lack a leaf, though he does not specify which leaf. The German philosopher and theologian Nicolaus Taurellus attacked the dominant Aristotelianism of the time, and endeavored to construct a philosophy which should harmonize faith and knowledge. Praz, p.163.

[Bound with:] Carmina Funebris. Nuremberg: Gerlach, 1592. 8o. 8 leaves. Title within woodcut border.
