TASSO, Torquato (1544-1595). Il Goffredo, ovvero Gerusalemme liberate. Venice: Antonio Groppo, 1760-1761.

2 volumes, 4o (298 x 210 mm). Engraved allegorical frontispiece, engraved portrait of the author, half-titles, title of the first volume printed in red and black, engraved vignettes on titles, 20 engraved plates after Pietro Antonio Novelli and Bernardo Castello, numerous engraved vignettes and initials. Contemporary Italian vellum with the gilt coat-of-arms of the Byron family added on the covers and lettered "Newstead Abbey", green morocco gilt lettering-pieces, red sprinkled edges (lightly soiled). Provenance: two unidentified armorial engravings pasted in at front and back; the Byron family (armorial binding); George Wildman (bookplate); acquired from William Schatzki, 1972.

A wide-margined copy of this beautifully illustrated Venetian edition. This copy is stamped with the arms of Newstead Abbey, the Byron family seat for nearly 4 centuries. In 1798, at the age of 10, Lord Byron inherited the estate. He waited until just before his 21st birthday to move in, and lived at the estate for 6 years, until 1814, when he moved to Italy. In 1817, facing financial difficulties, he sold Newstead and its remaining contents to Thomas Wildman, his boyhood friend. A fine copy. Gamba 948; Graesse VI, 33; Morazzoni 228. (2)
