A FINE YATAGHAN WITH SILVER-GILT MOUNTS
POSSIBLY GREEK (IOANNINA), THE BLADE DATED 1243 A.H (FOR 1827 A.D.)
With characteristic single-edged blade cut on each face with twin narrow fullers along the grooved back-edge, and with a gold-damascened panel on each face, one including the maker's signature 'al-Hajj Muhammad', the owner's name 'Ismail Agha' and the date, the forte with cast and chased silver-gilt cover decorated on each side in low relief with flowering tendrils against a punched ground, and characteristic eared silver-gilt hilt decorated with trophies of arms and mythical birds in low relief against a punched ground, the grip-straps and flower-heads each with niello decoration, in original wooden scabbard covered with crimson velvet embroidered with flowering foliage and with silver-gilt locket (mounting-loops removed) and chape, the former decorated with bands of running foliage, the latter with panels of flowering foliage and a serpent-head finial
