A CAUCASIAN SABRE WITH NIELLO-SILVER MOUNTS
LATE 19TH CENTURY
With curved single-edged blade double-edged at the point and cut along the back-edge on each side with a fuller, one side bearing two marks each with latten-inlaid border, one involving Islamic script, and hilt encased in niello silver comprising guard with tapering quillons and langets, and tapering grip with monster-head finial (knuckle-chain lacking), the whole decorated with embossed and chased panels of foliage and flowers bordered throughout with bands of beadwork, in original black-painted wooden scabbard (originally leather-covered) with mounts embossed and chased en suite with the hilt
