Lot Essay

John Adams studied under John Gibson in Rome for ten years as part of a scholarship gained from the Royal Academy schools where he was awarded a gold medal. He adopted the hyphenated name in 1868 to distinguish himself from the painter of the same name.
Another version of this marble was sold Sotheby's, The Contents of Stokesay Court, Ludlow, Shropshire, 28 September - 1 October 1994, lot 160, £20,700 and then again Sotheby's, London, 16 November 2006, lot 8 £34,800.
