A fine late 19th-century oxidised brass theodolite, by Hilderbrand, Freiberg i/s. No 4534, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, fore and aft sights and object glass dust cap, the axis with 6¼in. diam. vertical circle with silvered scale, two verniers and magnifiers, mounted with graduated bubble level and mirror reflector, the shaped vertical supports with fine screw adjustment, the telescope axis supporting the upper cross-bubble with mirror reflector arranged as a bridge, the lower sections of the vertical supports with micrometer telescopes to read the enclosed horizontal scale, the cover-plate with additional level and cross-bubble, the whole adjusted by tangent screw with clmap and raised on a pierced circular base with tripod stand, the three adjustable feet with clamping screws, contained with accessories, two fitted cases with wood-grain painted finish and metal carrying handles and straps, the larger case 17¼in. (44cm.) high, the smaller 17½in. (44.5cm.) wide
