Lot Essay

Anna Maria Louisa de'Medici (1667-1743) was the second child and only daughter of Cosimo III de'Medici (1642-1723), Grand Duke of Tuscany (see lot 182), and Marguerite Louise of Orleans (1645-1721). She married Johann Wilhelm II, Elector Palatine (1658-1716) in 1691 but the marriage did not produce any children. After her husband's death in 1716, Anna Maria returned to Florence but quarrelled with her brother Gian Gastone, then Grand Duke of Tuscany, who made her leave the Pitti Palace to live in the Villa La Quiete. She did, however, receive her brother's estate on his death, and by bequeathing it to the Tuscan state, ensured that the art collection formed by the Medicis over the previous three centuries, remained intact, in Florence. Herdeath marked the end of the Medici dynasty.
