FIRST EDITION. Set in the 21st century, Mary Shelley's novel focuses on six characters whose lives are dramatically interwoven with private and public issues of power. Then a cataclysmic plague intervenes, seemingly destroying every person on earth except one, Lionel Verney, the narrator. With its graphic scenes ofdeath and war, this highly political work of fiction received almost universally scathing reviews, but is today 'generally regarded as her second best novel' (ODNB). Block p. 213; Summers A Gothic Bibliography p. 383; Wolff 6281.
