PALLADIO, Andrea (1518-1580). The Architecture of A. Palladio. Edited by Giacomo Leoni. London: John Watts for the Author, 1715.

4 parts in 5 volumes, 2° (518 x 350mm). Engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait, list of subscribers, 205 engraved plates, and engraved illustrations. (Some spotting, some browning, frontispiece with repaired tear in the margin, a few other small repairs). Contemporary calf, sides panelled in blind within a gilt rule border, spines gilt in compartments with red morocco labels, edges sprinkled red (joints starting, some neat repairs mainly to spine ends, endpapers spotted).

'THIS EDITION MARKS A TURNING POINT IN THE HISTORY OF BRITISH PALLADIANISM, being not only the first complete English translation of I quattro libri but also the first edition to contain worthwhile engraved copies of the original woodcuts (several earlier editions had contained crude or incomplete copies)' (RIBA). 'Palladio's lasting influence on architectural style in many parts of the world was exercised less through his actual buildings than through his textbook' (PMM). Palladio's influence in the United States can be seen in Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, Jefferson's designs for the University of Virginia, numerous governmental buildings and mansions. The list of subscribers names 308 individuals; it is therefore likely that this set is one of less than 400 published. Fowler 223; Harris 683; RIBA 2391.
