A RECTANGULAR INSCRIBED DUAN INKSTONE
QIANLONG TWENTY-SEVENTH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1762 AND OF THE PERIOD
The rectangular inkstone is carved with a smoothly polished grinding surface inclining into a troughed inkwell. One vertical side is carved with a inscription signed Long Shi and dated to the twenty-seventh year of the Qianlong reign, corresponding to 1762. The recessed base is carved with a long poetic inscription in seal script and followed by the seal mark, Qin Huitian.

Lot Essay

Qin Huitian (1702-1764) was an eminent scholar-official during the Qianlong period, and an expert on Chinese rituals. His monumental work Wuli tongkao, 'A Comprehensive Analysis of the Five Categories of Ritulals', is one of the most important and thoroughly researched compendiums on Chinese rituals ever to have been compiled in history.
