A VERY RARE MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID BLACK-LACQUERED DOUBLE GOURD
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The natrually formed gourd is lacquered black overall and finely inlaid with a mixture of mother-of-pearl, gold and silver foil with two shaped cartouches on either side, each containing the characters da or ji, all reserved on a ground of fine diaper pattern, below a band of upright ruyi lappets around the neck, two classic scrolls around the waist, and further ruyi lappets around the base, surrounding the maker's mark in a square. The bone-inset stem is painted in gold lacquer.
