With browned twist signed barrels (2013 nitro reproof) numbered '2' on the rib, 2 3/4 in. (70mm) chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and cyl., action with carved percussion fences and signed 'PURDEY'S PATENT' on the underside, signed locks each with rebounding dolphin hammers and retaining traces of original case-hardened finish, top lever signed 'PATENT' and retaining some original blued finish, trigger-guard numbered '2' and retaining traces of original blued finish, engraved with double border lines throughout, 14 1/4 in. (36cm.) figured stock with chequered butt, grip and fore-end (chequering worn); together with A 12-BORE (PINFIRE) ROTARY-UNDERLEVER DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, BY GASQUOINE & DYSON, MARKET PLACE, MANCHESTER, SERIAL NO. 1609, CIRCA 1860, with rebrowned twist sighted barrels signed in full on the rib, action and back-action locks each engraved with scrollwork and game scenes, the latter each signed on a ribbon, and figured walnut stock with working figured extension (some wear throughout); in A PURDEY BRASS-CORNERED OAK & LEATHER DOUBLE GUNCASE, lined in crimson baize (the front barrel-compartment relined in red baize) with some accessories including a brass cartridge extractor, the lid with Purdey trade label (worn) and a smaller Curtis & Harvey's trade label with handwritten charges for gun no. 9162, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon and named to 'GEORGE R. BARNES, EWELL, SURREY' (both straps, handle and one compartment lid missing)

Lot Essay

The makers have kindly confirmed that gun no. 9162 was completed as a 12-bore toplever bar-action with 30in. barrels for a Mr. H.S. Jaffray in 1874. The vendor informs us that the George R. Barnes named on the case lid was his great, great grandfather
