Lot Essay

In 1963 Vaughan made a series of drawings in a sketch-book depicting labourers, drilling up the road outside his studio window in Belsize Park. The first drawings in the collection are based on direct observation and show the workers with pneumatic drills, hard-hats and boots. The later drawings, such as this, are more dynamic and vigorous, as limbs extend outwards and a sense of energetic movement is suggested.
