Lot Essay

An identical model also in marble is in the Museum voor Schone Kinsten Gent, museum no. 1879-B. Polydore Comeyn (Comein) was born in Ypres in 1848. He exhibited at Brussels and Berlin, and in 1878, received a Mention Honorables at the Exposition Universelle (V. Champier, L’année Artistique, Paris, 1879, p. 13). In La Belgique à l’Exposition Universelle de 1878, 'Les marbres et les plâtres de... [Monseiur] Comein… obtiennent un success de bon aloi’. The same model but of smaller dimensions was also produced in bronze and terracotta versions.
