Lot Essay

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
C. Chevillot, Emmanuel Fremiet: La main et le multiple, Dijon, 1988, p. 144, S 272.

Fremiet premiered his Saint George at the 1891 Salon where it was bought by the French state. Maison Thiébaut cast a 320 cm. high ‘bronze monumental’ version for the 1900 Paris Exposition universelle. Testament to the popularity of the model, Saint George was subsequently edited by Leblanc-Barbedienne and in 1910 was priced at 750 fr. in bronze, and for examples such as the present lot: 925 fr. in bronze doré.
