Meiji period (late 19th century), signed Kyoto Namikawa (Workshop of Namikawa Yasuyuki; 1845-1927)
The tapering ovoid jar decorated in polychrome enamels and gold and silver wires with panels of beige, light blue, brown and speckled green designed with scattered flowers and butterflies, the lid, shoulder and foot rim with a floret pattern on a reddish brown ground, the lid set with a gilt-copper chrysanthemum finial, signature on a silver tablet mounted on base; gilt rims

An imperial gift to Alice Roosevelt Longworth (1884-1980), daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, according to an accompanying handwritten note from the former owner stating that it was given to Mrs. Longworth in Japan by the Japanese emperor during her visit with Herbert Hoover (1874-1964), the 31st U.S. President
