A Two-color Carved Inkstone with Lacquered-wood Box
(early 20th century)
The inkstone rectangular of green and brown stone carved with lobed slab with grinding surface in the shape of the sun and sunken cresent-moon-shaped reservoir surrounded by seasonal imagery of geese, mountains and moon, plum, bamboo and crane wading in a stream, all carved in high, pierced relief, using principally the green color of the stone; the inkstone encased in a bracket-footed wood box applied with glossy black lacquer embellished with gold plum boughs and diaperwork, the cover of the box decorated in gold with a foliate-shaped panel of a dragon curled between clouds and rounded mountains within a diaperwork border, the sides of the lid matching the lower box
