AN UNUSUAL GOLD-DECORATED SILVER MELON-FORM BOX AND COVER
LATE QING DYNASTY, 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY
The silver box is in the shape of a melon borne on the 14k gold stem of a leafy vine with scrolling tendrils and flowers with 'jeweled' centers that continues up onto the fitted cover. A gold katydid stands amidst the vine on one side, and there is a dark blue cabochon within a fine gold bezel at one end. Two marks, Huguosi and Binhua, are stamped on the flat base.

Joseph Cresalia (1868-1960) Collection, acquired in 1910, and thence by descent within the family.
