Lot Essay

It has been suggested that this composition was designed by Yesari Zadeh Mustafa 'Izzet (1770-1849), the son of Muhammad As'ad Yasari of which a fine levha is offered in this sale, lot 266. He may have designed this panel whilst under the influence of his father from whom he received his ijaza. The levha signed by Yesari Zadeh is in the Nasser D. Khalili collection (Nabil S. Safwat, The Art of the Pen, Oxford, 1996, cat.76, pp.146-147).

The composition is a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad. It translates 'Al-Hasan, quoting his father ['Ali], and his father in turn quoting his grand-father [Muhammad], said, Good nature is the best attribute of beauty'. The phrase is an exercise on the letters and root ha, sin, nun which means 'good' or 'beautiful'. It is rare to find such a clever combination of words in jali ta'liq.
