CHARLES LYELL (1797-1875)
Principles of Geology, being an Attempt to Explain the Former Changes of the Earth's Surface, by Reference to Causes Now in Operation. London: John Murray, 1832-1833. 3 volumes, 8° (215 x 133mm), comprising second edition of vol. I, first editions of vols II and III. Without half-title to vol. III (no half-titles issued in vols I and II). 3 engraved frontispieces, those to vols II and III hand-coloured, 3 engraved maps, that to vol. I folding and in second state, that to vol. II folding and hand-coloured, and the one in vol. III hand-coloured, 5 engraved plates, 136 wood-engraved text-figs. (Tiny marginal chip to III.H3, some occasional faint browning and spotting.) Contemporary half calf over marbled-paper covered boards (extremities lightly rubbed, some loss to spine labels on vol. III). Provenance: John C. Thackray.
A mixed set in contemporary uniform half calf, reflecting the fact that Murray published the second edition of Vol. I in the same year as the first edition of Vol. II. A second edition of vol. II was issued at the end of 1832, but presumably the purchaser ignored this, and completed the set by purchasing the final volume in 1833. No second edition of Vol. III was ever published; instead Murray issued a uniform third edition in 4 volumes in November 1834. Ward & Carozzi 1408.
