PASCOE THOMAS
A True and Impartial Journal of a Voyage to the South-Seas, and Round the Globe, in His Majesty's Ship the Centurion, under the Command of Commodore George Anson. London: S. Birt & others, 1745. 8° (193 x 120mm). List of subscribers. (Title slightly shorter at outer margin, occasional soiling and browning.) Modern half mottled calf, gilt spine (extremities lightly rubbed.) Provenance: Mr. Carl Wendell Carlsmith (booklabel).
RARE FIRST EDITION, PRECEDING THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT of Anson's voyage by three years. Thomas sailed as mathematician aboard Centurion and gives quite an impartial, though sometimes brief, account. Of most interest is his detailed appendix of information not published in the official account by Walters: a catalogue of all the treasure taken by Anson from Spanish ships and towns; an English translation of a captured Spanish manuscript listing the Latitudes and Longitudes of most places in the South Seas; and finally, a tabulation of deaths aboard Centurion -- less than 130 men returned of the 510 who left England, [with] 'many more [deaths] in proportion from every Ship in the Squadron'. Palau 331781; Hill 1693; Sabin 95437.
