Lot Essay

A copy of this composition by Gabriel Gresly is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dole (see M.-D. Joubert, Gaspard Gresly, un peintre franc-comtois au XVIIIe siècle, catalogue of the exhibition held in Besançon, Musée des Beaux-Arts, and Bourg-en-Bresse, Musée de Brou, 1994, no. 29). An untraced painting of this subject, possibly by Joachim van Sandrart, was admired by Rubens in the Utrecht studio of Gerrit van Honthorst, and may have been purchased by him (as recounted by Sandrart and Houbraken in their histories).
