EPISTOLAE GRAECAE -- Epistolae diversorum philosophorum, in Greek. Edited by Marcus Musurus (c.1470-1517). Venice: Aldus Manutius, [29] March 1499; [not before 17 April 1499].
2 volumes in one, super-chancery 4° (212 x 142mm). Collation: I: *6 a-f12 g-h8 i10 k-t8 u6 x-2b8 A-C8 D4; II: a-e8 f-g6 h-r8 s6. Contents as in GW. 266 and 138 leaves, with blank g8 in part I. 26 lines. Type: 2:114Gk (text), 2:114R (titles, preliminary matter, colophons). Initial spaces with guide-letters. (An occasional minor spot.) French red straight-grained morocco gilt in the style of Bozerian, neoclassical border on sides, pointillé decoration on spine (minor scuffing). Provenance: 18th-century ms note in French on flyleaf - [Samuel Butler, Bp. of Lichfield (pencilled note on flyleaf, sale Christie's, 1 June 1840, lot 851] -- Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773-1843; armorial bookplate; sale Evans, 30 Jan. 1845, lot 615, £1. 10s to Rodd).
EDITIO PRINCEPS, THE LICHFIELD-SUSSEX COPY, of the great majority of the letters. Musurus brought together 35 authors in his extensive collection, ranging from Plato, Isocrates and Aeschines from antiquity to 4th-century authors such as Gregory of Nazianzus and later to Procopius of Gaza. Also included are Synesius, Aristotle, Alexander the Great, and St. Basil; other letters are spurious or of doubtful authorship, such as those by Hippocrates and Euripides. The Aldine Epistolae Graecae 'was not replaced by an equally useful collection until 1873, the date of R. Hercher's Epistolographi graeci' (Wilson, Byzantium to Italy, p.150). The present copy once formed part of the celebrated Aldine collection of Samuel Butler, Bishop of Lichfield, whose sale at Christie's in June 1840 was 'the most extensive series [of Aldines] ever submitted to Public sale of Books'.
