HORAE, use of Rome. Paris: Germain Hardouin, [n.d., almanac for 1515-1530].
PRINTED ON VELLUM. 8° (204 x 130mm). 86 leaves (of ?88, lacking [1/6 and presumably one [?blank?] in the final quire. Large metalcut Hardouin centaur device on title, 18 other large cuts by the Pichore workshop, a different large Hardouin armorial device at end, and 25 smaller cuts, all but the final device fully coloured by a contemporary hand, initials in liquid gold on pink or blue ground, gold painted border to each large cut, yellow initial strokes, ruled in red. (Some light soiling and rubbing, vellum flaw in one leaf.) 17th-century French red morocco gilt, sides stamped with an elaborate panel by Dubuisson, drawer-handle outer border, flat spine with a semé of rosettes and ermines, gilt edges (remboitage, originally containing an almanac for 1750, a little worn). Provenance: Charlotte Dally, Dame de He[cliy] (contemporary inscription at end) – Pierre Massoy, Paris, 1672 (inscription at end) – manuscript quote from Dibdin’s Bibliographical Decameron at end – William, Lord Monson (armorial bookplate).
Illustrated with Hardouin’s 8°-size Horae metalcuts, augmented by the Flagellation from his 4° series, all from the Pichore workshop. Not in Lacombe, Bohatta, or Van Praet, possibly Brunet Heures 247.
