AN IMPERIAL EDICT
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795), DATED 1761
The edict is written on silk brocade woven with a pattern of cranes in flight. The text relates to the promotion of officials and is arranged in standard format reading from left to right in Manchu and repeated from right to left in Chinese characters. The Chinese text opens with "Fengtian Gaoming" that may be translated as "By Command of Heaven", flanked by a pair of dragons, the text is dated the eleventh month of the twenty-sixth year of Qianlong's reign, corresponding to 1761. It is stamped with two illegible large seals.
