AN IMPERIAL EDICT
DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850), DATED 1850
It is written in ink on silk brocade woven with a pattern of scattered clouds scrolls, and is mounted as a hand scroll with 18th century brocade covers. The text relates to the promotion of officials and is arranged in standard format reading from left to right in Manchu and repeated from right to left in Chinese characters. The Chinese text opens with "Fengtian Gaoming" that may be translated as "By Command of Heaven", flanked by a pair of dragons, the text is dated the fourth month of the thirtieth year of Daoguang, corresponding to 1850. It is stamped with two illegible large seals.
