Doyle had studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh (1876-1881) and practiced in Aston, Birmingham, Sheffield and other venues. He began to publish short fiction at that time and in September 1879 published his first medical article, "Gelsemium as a Poison" in the British Medical Journal.
