Lot Essay

One of a number of studies by Molijn with very similar compositions, showing wagon-teams and travellers resting beside a rank of cottages. Comparable drawings are in the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (also dated 1654), in the George and Maida Abrams Collection, Boston (also 1654), and in a Swiss private collection (dated 1655) (H.-U. Beck, Pieter Molyn: Katalog der Handzeichnungen, Doornspijk, 1998, nos. 236, 255, and 277).
