8° (115 x 69mm). Printer's device on the title, 118 woodcut illustrations attributed to Bernard Salomon. (Without the final blank, some short marginal tears one of these repaired, light marginal soiling.) 19th-century polished red morocco, sides with gilt rule border, the spine lettered directly in gilt (joints rubbed). Provenance: Bernard Quaritch (pencilled collation note) -- A.H. Bright (signature dated 1934 on endpaper).
RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK DEVOTED TO DEVICES OF HISTORICAL PERSONS, 'a book which played a very important role in the European emblem tradition' (Landwehr). 'The work probably served as a model book for several publisher's devices' (Mortimer). This edition unknown to Brunet who records only the 1557 second edition; ABPC and AE record only one copy at auction in the past 40 years, the Prince August - Schaefer copy. Landwehr Romanic, 563; Mortimer French 409; Vinet 480: 'recueil fort intéressant'.
