PARACELSUS, Theophrastus (Bombast von Honenheim, called). Prognasticatio eximii doctoris theophrasti Paracelsi. [?Augsburg,] 1536 [but possibly later].

4° (235 x 180mm). 32 engraved plates. (Without final blank, repaired marginal tear on title, light soiling.) Early 20th-century morocco by Capè, gilt spine, turn-ins and edges. Provenance: Henry Huth (1815-1878; bookplate) -- A.H. Bright (book label and tipped letter addressed to him dated 1940).

An early issue with the date in Arabic numerals, and with a shorter title than in Praz; the first edition was dated in Roman numerals and in octavo format. 'The 32 woodcuts of this famous book symbolize events relating to the kingdom of Ferdinand of Austria; they are interpretations of visions, not emblems proper... However the book is claimed to be an emblem-book by all catalogues, and as it is both rare and attractive, it would be difficult to persuade emblem-collectors to exclude it'. (Praz, p. 444, citing the more common 1536 edition, with a variant title, 24 leaves, and woodcuts instead of engravings). A PARTICULARLY RARE EDITION OF A SCARCE BOOK. Cicognara 1928; Praz p. 444.
