VAENIUS, Otto (Otto van VEEN, 1556-1629). Amorum emblemata, figuris Aeneis incise. Antwerp: Venalia apud Auctorem, Hieronymus Verdussen, 1608.
Oblong 4° (156 x 195mm). Latin, Dutch and French text. Woodcut title vignette, one engraved full-page illustration and 124 emblems, each within an oval woodcut frame, one by C. Boel, the rest by Vaenius. (Title soiled, a few mainly marginal repairs, stain on 2B4v and 2C1r affecting image of the latter, a few margins a little frayed, some browning and spotting.) 19th-century half vellum. Provenance: scored through inscription on title – [H. Yates Thompson] -- A. H. Bright (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION OF THIS POLYGLOT VERSION. The charming engravings show Cupids encountering the various trials of Love. 'Tous sont traités avec infiniment de finesse et de talent' (Vinet).
