QUARLES, Francis (1592-1644). Emblems. London: printed by G[eorge] M[iller] and sold by John Marriots, 1635.
Small 8° (135 x 87mm). Engraved title by William Marshall, 78 emblems by W. Marshall, W. Simpson, Vaughan and John Payne. Quarleis with separate divisional title by W. Marshall. (Some, mainly marginal repairs, mainly at beginning and end, occasionally with slight loss of text, lightly soiled.) Blue morocco gilt by W. Pratt, double fillet border on sides with single floral cornerpiece, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: unidentified bookplate of a baron.
Edition with “played” in line 9 on A2r and without the quotation from St. Augustine on N4r. This copy contains the often missing poem by Benlowes Quarleis, bound-in at the end. STC 20540.5. Together with another copy of the above work, bound in morocco by Riviere. A variant edition with “playd” in line 9 on A2r and the quotation from St. Augustine on N4r. This copy lacks the poem by Benlowes. STC 20540. Both works were published in the same year. Praz p. 464 (both copies).
