GERARD, John (1545-1612). The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes very much enlarged and amended by Thomas Johnson. London: Adam Islip, Joyce Norton and Richard Whitakers, 1636.
One volume bound in two, 2° (328 x 219mm). Engraved title incorporating a portrait of the author, 2,821 botanical woodcuts in the text, a few hand-coloured in a near-contemporary hand (daffodil, lily, etc.). (Lacking blanks ¶1 and 7B6, engraved title trimmed at head, occasional light spotting and soiling, with a few short marginal tears.) Contemporary mottled calf, covers with gilt borders, rebacked preserving original spines (extremities rubbed, spines more heavily). Provenance: Sir Henry Fitzroy Herbert Bart. (armorial bookplate in vol II).
