2° (339 x 215 mm). Woodcut botanical illustrations throughout (six of them copied from the Julia Anicia Codex of Dioscorides) by Arnaud Nicolai and Gerard Jansen van Kampen after drawings by Pieter van der Borcht, eight-line and smaller woodcut capitals, woodcut printer's device on title. (Title with small hole just touching a few letters and very minor marginal tear and worming, small marginal hole to dedication, first leaves lightly creased at upper fore-edge, ink pen trials to O3v-O4r and Zz4v-Zz5r, large tears to P6 and i1 but without loss, very small marginal chip to c6, very small marginal hole to g6, last 9 leaves of index and privilege leaf worn and soiled with 6 of them remargined, variable spotting and soiling throughout.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: occasional ink marginalia in an early hand -- 'Ex dono Domini Johnstone do Hilton' (inscription on title, perhaps of Arthur Johnstone [c.1579-1641], poet and physician to Charles I) -- Edward Howell (Liverpool bookseller's letter dated 9 October 1906 loosely inserted).

FIRST EDITION. 'Dodoens's last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from a number of his earlier books, including the Cruydeboeck' (Hunt) and the basis for all subsequent versions. Gerard's 1597 herbal was largely drawn from this work. Hunt 143; Nissen BBI 517; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 1489; Wellcome I, 1823.
