Lot Essay

In 1956, He Ningyi and his family left Taiwan and moved to Brazil, where they became Zhang Daqian's neighbors. (Zhang Daqian lived outside Sao Paulo in Brazil from 1954 until 1971, although he traveled frequently and extensively.) During this period, He Ningyi and Zhang Daqian had many exchanges; the former was able to watch the latter create innumerable masterpieces. Zhang Daqian and He Ningyi shared a love for Chinese paintings, calligraphy, poetry, and cuisine. They would often dine and have tea with friends, discussing many subjects, from ancient to modern, after finishing their meal.
