Lot Essay

The decoration on the present jar appears to be an adaptation of a Ming-dynasty pattern. See Sir Harry Garner, Oriental Blue and White, London, 1977, col. pl. 2, for a Xuande jar with a similarly painted lotus scroll. Similar Qianlong-marked jars include two sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 October 1995, lots 656 and 656A, and another sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, 29 May 2007, lot 1461. See, also, the jar from the T.Y. Chao Collection, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 18 November 1986, lot 75.
