One side is carved in low relief with a pair of quail amidst millet, the scene highlighted with added russet color, and on the reverse with an imperial Qianlong poem, 'Ode to Nine Quail by Ma Kui', followed by two seals, qian and long.

Lot Essay

In the poem the Emperor Qianlong expresses his praise for the Southern Song painter Ma Kui's painting, Nine Quail, which represents 'everlasting peace,' and claims that it is also his own wish to have such peace for his country.
